I didn’t realise that it should be divided into squares, and was already using the calendar, so only used it once, but it did make me realise that I was doing almost no writing.
GAME OF THRONES IN RUSSIAN LANGUAGE TRIAL
Towards the end of May I experimented with a trial version of Lizzie Pinard’s language learning flower, where she suggested colouring in the flower depending on what you’ve done. It seems that once you get started, it’s easy to get sucked in and do more ? You can also see that very often I spent considerably more than ten minutes on my Russian. …and the work in progress for June: June 2014 RussianĪs you can see, in the seven weeks since I wrote that post, I’ve only missed four days, all in May. I started using a similar system when I was trying to walk more last year, and I found that the gaping holes when nothing was written made me feel bad, and I wanted to minimise them! This is the final result for May: May 2014 Russian I record what I’ve done on an old calendar, along with my physio/exercise. Since I started doing this, I have very rarely missed a day of Russian. Everything else is in another list at the side, and when I’ve finish the things for the day I can start on the less urgent things.) (On a side note, I’ve discovered this daily to-do list makes me much more efficient, as long as I’m realistic about what I put on each day based on the time I have available. Other things to do are then added around them, as you can see from Monday. By having them on the list, I’m much more likely to make time for them every day.

At the beginning of each week, it looks like this: To-do listĮach day I have a series of codes: ‘Ph’ = physio, F = feedly (blog reading to try and keep up!), R = Russian, FJ = flo-joe (FCE word bank) and, new last week because of the success of the others, W = walk.
So what happened? Planning and recordingĪbout two months ago I moved to a system of having a daily to-do list for everything. To finish the post, I made a commitment to study Russian for ten minutes every day and gave a list of activities I would try. Peterson’s upcoming book on creating languages, The Art of Language Invention: From Horse-Lords to Dark Elves, The Words Behind World-Building, will be released in September of 2015.At the start of May I wrote about my Russian lessons and what I was and wasn’t doing at home to further my learning. Languages that are being consciously revitalized like Hawaiian, or Modern Hebrew, which was constructed to adapt to a modern world and build a national identity, also qualify as conlang.Īs well as creating grammar rules, an internal logic, and incorporating sounds from other languages, Peterson, who will also be a panel member for the Library Journal webcast, delves into the culture of the fictional world of the language he creates “When it comes to the meanings of new words they either come directly from a translation that I have to do or just through thinking about the culture what is an average boring day like for a Dothraki warrior?” He has also created languages for multiple shows on Syfy and the CW. The definition of constructed languages can include more than just the lore of fantasy novels. He argues that any language creation is reflective of a dissatisfaction with the languages around us. One of the panel members, Michael Adams, the author of Elvish to Klingon: Exploring Invented Languages, suggests that constructed language, or conlang, does have a place in the conversation of modern languages.

On April 22, Library Journal is holding a webcast panel of language creators and authors to answer these questions. So what exactly are invented languages, how are they created, and do they have a place in the modern world? If revitalized languages or incomplete languages from video games and novels were also included in the count, there would be more invented languages than natural languages. There are over 6,000 world languages, but there are also over 1,000 invented languages from fantasy novels, sci-fi television shows, and other creative sources that have enough grammar and vocabulary to be fully used in everyday life. Last October, Living Language released an official language learning pack for Dothraki that features books, CDs, an expanded online course option, and even a companion iPhone application.
